Traditional Chinese medicine is a medicinal framework which uses acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to address disease and restore equilibrium of the body.
Treatment is centred on pinpointing your health aims and constructing an individual and specialized treatment plan for you. Using TCM and its holistic approach to health, treatment ranges from improving general health and energy to address specific and individual conditions such as menopause and weight loss.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has a history dating back thousands of years. It incorporates acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, cupping and lifestyle changes, working on the premise that good health relies on maintaining balance of the individual, body, mind and spirit. It therefore focuses on prevention as well as treatment.
TCM addresses the bodys normal function and disease processes from a holistic approach, working on the bodies energy supply. When the body is healthy this energy (or qi) flows through meridians (channels which run throughout the body).
Disease can occur when there is a blockage of this energy flow such as tennis elbow or sciatica. While symptoms of light headedness or poor concentration can be due to an inadequate supply of this energy.
Through consultation, practitioners can establish a diagnosis and treatment for the individual's presentation. Treatment is focused on the underlying condition as well as addressing the presenting symptoms.
Through the medium of Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture and cupping, some of the conditions Chinese medicine can address are as follows:
- Stress related disorders such as insomnia, headaches, depression, anxiety, poor concentration and memory
- Respiratory disorderssuch as colds, flu, asthma, hay fever
- Musculoskeletal such as sciatica, sprained joints, shoulder, back and neck pain, osteoarthritis
- Skin disorders such as eczema, acne and psoriasis
- Gastrointestinal conditions such as irritable bowel, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation
- Cardiovascular disorders such as high blood pressure, hypertension
- Gynaecological conditions such as irregular and painful menstruation, menopausal symptoms, infertility, Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Pregnancy and Obstetrics such as morning sickness, labour induction, mastitis
- Addictions such as smoking
- Aged and sun damaged skin, especially facial skin issues such as wrinkling
The initial consultation is an hour long session. A detailed history is taken to ascertain the patients current physical and mental state as well as relevant family and patient history. Through consultation the treatment aims and expectations of the patient will be addressed and the practitioner will establish a diagnosis and treatment to best suit the individual's presentation.
Treatment typically involves acupuncture or needle free acupuncture. Chinese herbal medicine may be given in conjunction to supplement the acupuncture treatment or administered on its own. Cupping, Gua sha, Moxa and dietary advice may also be used if and when relevant to the individual case.
