What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a system of health care that focuses on treatment of the physical body. It is a form of manual medicine based on diagnosis and treatment of structural and mechanical problems in the joints, muscles and connective tissue. Its philosophy is based on the body’s natural capacity to heal and regulate itself when organs and systems in the body are working in harmony.

What kinds of problems do osteopaths treat?

Osteopaths treat any musculoskeletal disorders either acute, or chronic such as sprains/strains of ligaments or muscles, headaches, migraines, spinal and joint problems. We also treat problems associated with pregnancy (pre and post childbirth), pediatric conditions, sporting injuries and digestive problems.

  What happens in a treatment?

In an initial treatment, your case history will be taken followed by a physical examination to look at the soft tissues and joint motion. This enables the osteopath to make a diagnosis of the structures causing and leading to the pain.

The treatment itself uses ‘hands on’ techniques to massage, stretch, articulate or manipulate but more importantly to feel what is happening in the tissues. The techniques used are very safe and gentle.

Advice on stretching, exercises, occupational hazards and posture will be given to help the body and prevent further recurrences.
